See Joe Run

This week has flown by!

Oh, where to begin!? Let’s start with the house. I did my weekly stop by and was pleasantly surprised!

I remember when I first started this process, everyone said that once the slab is down, the process really takes off with the framework. I’m excited to see how things shape up in the coming weeks. Now that the slab is down, I’m starting to get  a picture of where everything will end up. I can see the dining room…a place to host countless dinners and holiday get togethers. I’m looking forward to the memories to be build within this house…this home.

Next up: Sedona

The Running Partner and I were supposed to make a trip out to Sedona this past weekend. Due to uncontrollable circumstances, it needed to be postponed to this coming weekend. Even before I came to Arizona, I had heard Sedona was known for its spiritual properties. After doing some research, I discovered that Sedona is home to a few “Vortexes.” I’m fascinated by this and hope to see them in person. Expect lots of pictures. Reading about the Vortexes reminds me of the World of Warcraft and Ley Lines. Apparently there are lines in the world where magical energy runs. I wonder if there is a correlation between the two. I’ll have to dig into it a bit more.

Part of me is scared about the trip going up and back. I remember moving here and driving through the mountains. I absolutely freaked out. How in the world to people go 65 MPH around the side of a mountain. One false move could send your car off to the side and into a nasty fall. I was literally going 25 MPH during my final drive. Other drivers were less than pleased, but I kept myself safe, right?

Running

Nike+ is absolutely amazing! I found the app today and instantly fell in love. This app uses GPS to map your running route, pace, and distance. While all of that is amazing, the best part is that it can link to Facebook. When someone likes or comments on your in-progress run, it will create a cheering sound to play over your current music. It was nice to know that people were being supportive while on the run. A built in cheering section!

Today’s run was 4 miles. This was a new personal best in terms of distance. Surprisingly, my time was around 35 minutes. The next 5k is August 12 and I’m aiming for a time below 30 minutes. If this GPS bit is accurate, I should be able to make it! Each day until then, I’ll be running a bit longer. The eventual goal is to run a half-marathon in February. I think I can get this done if I keep it up!

These boots were made for walkin’….

The gym has certainly missed me this past week. Fear not! I’ve been on the road and running!

I’m starting to increase my speed and time. Slowly, but surely I am improving myself along the way. This includes mentally and physically. I feel better when I get a chance to run. It gives me a chance to think and not worry about much else. When I was running today, I noticed that my strides were become longer and I had a lot more speed. I’ll take it!

My roommate was looking into getting these five-finger shoes. He is looking to start running and I can’t wait to have him as a running buddy. 🙂 I’ve thought about getting a similar pair of shoes, but these $10 shoes from Walmart have served me very well so far. Maybe my wardrobe will get a facelift as soon as the house is done. Until then, these boots will have to do, lol.

In terms of guys, I’m starting to come to some conclusions. I shouldn’t invest in people who don’t invest in me. My self worth needs some development in this area and I’m starting to work on it. I want a relationship where someone wants me as much as I would want him. Until he comes along, I’ll just keep working on improving myself….for myself, of course.  By the way, is it just me, or are all guys flakey with text messages?

The Running Partner

A lot’s happened in the past few days…

Outside of all of the housing drama (see previous blog entry), I’ve been preparing for my second 5k (Splash Mob 5k). While I’ve been consistently going to the gym after work for an hour (60 minutes of elliptical usually), I realized that it still didn’t get me to where I needed to be for my running endurance. On the Thursday before the race, I decided to spend my time running outside of the track.

Thankfully, I had one of my coworkers running the track along with me (though at a different pace). Each lap around the track was 0.44 miles (or something like that) and I decided to run 6 laps. The weather was a bit cloudy at first and gave me some much needed shade as I was running. While my running partner was there running the track, our paths never crossed. This was a bit sad as I really wanted some company. After 2-3 laps, she called it quits and went inside to use the machines as the sun had come out to play and started heating things up. I stayed on to finish my six laps. It felt good. It felt really good to be alone on that track and doing something that was going to better myself.

The past few days, I had started talking to this guy on an online dating app (nothing new for me). He was big into the outdoors and I was telling him about the upcoming 5k. Eventually, I invited him to go with me and he was more than happy to join me. We met up that night and watched a movie at my place (one of the Eating Out movies). I’m always a bit nervous about meeting people for the first time. Will he like me? What if I’m not good enough? What if I don’t like him? The questions never seem to stop in my head. Thankfully, a smile and a hug quieted all of my endless questions.

The next day, there was a registration event for the run. I invited him out and to join me for some dinner afterwards. The Splash Mob 5k proceeds are set up to assist homeless populations in the valley and they were also running a clothing drive. I had a huge tub of clothes from back in my bigger days (over 40 shirts/pants) and brought it all out to be donated. The people there seemed really happy to see my bring in all of these clothes and I hope someone will be able to use them. I dropped of my clothes and waited for my running buddy (the guy from the app).

He did show up a bit later than expected, but I was still happy he was able to come and register. While filling out his paperwork, the worker asked if we were together after I had explained that I had already signed up. I was bumbling through my words trying to explain that we were running the race together while the running buddy simply said “yes.” Cute and bold. After we got our materials, we headed to the local restaurant and had a decent meal (with post meal fro-yo and some indie cover music) at Tempe Marketplace. We had to call it an early night as the run was the next morning and started at 7am.

The next morning went by so fast! The sun was certainly up and was heating up the area rather quick. The running buddy was running late, but got here with a few minutes to spare before the run. As the gun sounded, we were chatting with this one couple who had this fanny pack belt with space for water bottles. I need to invest in one of these so that I have a place to put my phone/keys. I was particularly worried as this was a splash mob. They had kids (and some adults) scattered throughout the course of the trail ready to pelt runners with water cannons and balloons. The running buddy and I started out very strong, but this was his first 5k and he had not done much prep work. It wasn’t long before he needed to walk to catch his breath. I slowed my pace and kept with him for the duration of the run. The only exceptions came when there were soaking stations and I tried to speed past those to avoid getting splashed. My time was certainly worse than the previous week due to the stopping/walking, but it was worth it to have someone beside me for the run. Good company is better than a good time. Here are some pictures from the event.

After the run, we parted ways for a few hours. My roommate, the running buddy, and I went to see the new Batman Movie. I was very impressed with the movie and found myself wanting more. Specifically, I wanted more Selina Kyle. That storyline stole the show! The running buddy did fall asleep during the movie and found it to be a bit predictable. Afterwards, the three of us went to Spinatos for some delicious pizza. Kinda blew the point of the 5k, but it was a nice treat every once a bit!

So where do I go from here? I think I want to maybe try for a 10k at some point. After this 5k, I thought I could make another run out of it. Given, I was going at a slower pace, but I wasn’t even winded at the end of it. Maybe there’s hope for me! 🙂

Housing Woes

Disturbing Phone Calls Suck!

I received a phone call earlier this week that left me scratching my head. The sales office of my new home called and said that while my credit score was good, they still wanted me to open additional lines of credit. I had just started building my own credit (from nothing) last October and thought I was going to be sufficient with my one little credit card. My reaction was extremely negative and quite a few “nasty-grams” were sent off to the relevant people inquiring about the situation and why it took them over a month to even let me know this.

At this point, I was ready to tell them that if they wouldn’t approve me as I am, then I would not be getting this house. I had even started looking at other apartments to rent. My feelings were a bit hard to describe because letting myself believe that I was no longer tied to the house was certainly disappointing, but also a bit freeing.

The next day, I received a call from my loan processor (recipient of one of the nasty-grams) and she called an apologized for all of the confusion. The sales office was going off of a month old document and they had not factored in my other sources of credit when they removed me from being an authorized user on some of the family credit cards (had them since college). After it was all over, she mentioned it was a mistake and that they should not have called me as everything looked like it was good to go for the loan. Now it goes into underwriting (again) and I hope to see some good results!

I stopped by the house site today and there is some new progress on the construction. Instead of mounds of dirt, I have this:

Splash Mob 5k Prep

It’s funny to think that I am looking forward to running again. I signed up for the Splash Mob 5k this morning.

http://splashmob5k.com/

Registration was a bit more expensive, but apparently it comes with some goodies this time around and the funds go to a great cause (homeless children). I also have to donate two articles of used clothing to a clothing drive. This one is easy enough, I have a whole tub full of clothes from my bigger days that is sitting on my closet floor. It’s about time I cleaned house. I think I’ll add to the pile and finally get rid of my 42 sized pants and XXL shirts.

Now that I have this event on my radar, I feel motivated to do better than my last run. It is very easy for me to want to go to the gym and push just a little bit harder. My last 5k time was 32 minutes. This time around, I want to break the 30 minute mark. I think this might be doable depending on how the event is organized. In the meantime, I will continue to work out and eat right to prepare. I’m feeling better and I will be better.

In better news, I may have a date to see Batman for this weekend. Here’s hoping!

Random Musings for the Night

Tonight was a charity event at another local bar. One of my buddies was the MC and I wanted to show my support. I was surprised by the turnout! The entire parking lot was packed and everyone seemed to be having a great time inside. Even with that said, there was just something a bit off about tonight. I think I’m starting to hesitate about going out to the bars. I want to meet new people and I want them to be of substance and merit. I think that I will have a hard time finding that at times when most of what I see tends to be more focused on who you’re going home with rather than getting to know you as a person.

While I like bars and trying new drinks, I still don’t really fit in….at all. This one guy came up to me and asked if it was my first time out because I looked like I was so scared. I don’t recall being scared, but apparently I was giving off that vibe. I was relatively comfortable, but perhaps the scene just isn’t for me.

Some people say that you will find what you are looking for when you stop looking for it. I don’t really know if that’s true. If I stopped looking for what I want in life, then I think I would just sit at home and surf on the web for days on end. Having an objective helps keep me active and out there. So for the time being, I will continue. There is some merit in the idea of choosing another objective other than finding a relationship. Perhaps I can shift my focus to getting more active and fit as my objective and meet people along the way.

With all that said, I noticed that there is another 5k this coming weekend. This one seems a bit more special as it has a fun theme. They will have children with water guns and water pistols shooting the runners along the way. To me, this is amazing and I totally want to do this! I think I’ll sign up tomorrow!

You Only Live Once…

So, last night was….special.

One of my band buddies invited me to this black ritual themed bar party. I’ve never been to a themed party of any sort, let alone at the bar. The interesting thing was that this bar is often frequented by the more “ursine” of the population. I’ll let you take that as you can!  So, with that in mind, I grabbed my roommate and we headed out for a night on the town!

When we got there, I was less than impressed. The space was a lot smaller than the pictures lead itself to believe. I was driving so I got myself a diet soda and found my perch for the night to watch the festivities. The crowd was certainly older and not a lot was happening at first. There were less than 10 people at the bar. That all began to change as the hours started to pass. A more varied mix of people came in and out came all of the leather.  This was an unexpected turn of events. If you have ever kept fish, you know that you put new fish in their own little bag to acclimate it to the water and surrounding fish. I kinda felt like that fish last night. I was in my own little bubble and wasn’t quite sure how to act or what to do. One thing’s for sure…the leather culture is full of some very uninhibited people.

I won’t go into detail with what I witnessed, but let’s just say…wow. People were really not holding back….much of anything. I enjoy a bit of modesty in my clothing and actions, but it seems like all that was thrown out of the window at around 11pm last night.

Some of the other band people eventually turned up and provided me with some relief to my bubble. It was comforting to see them also feeling a bit awkward about the place.  It helped me feel not so alone there.

So, long story short….while I don’t think I will be going back, I was able to try something new and certainly saw a lot more than I was expecting!

Housing, Dogs, and Running…

I did it!

Never thought I would be doing something like this for fun.

I was out with some friends last night until around midnight. We checked out the Second Fridays event at Mesa. It was themed to support local dog shelters (Dog Days of Summer). Oh my goodness! There were so many adorable dogs there. I had to try really hard not to adopt one on the spot. Once the house is complete, that will be the first thing that I do. This one small dog was walking around with bat wings and another had a silver top hat. It was hilarious! So cute!

I got a few neat pictures of these statues in Mesa. They were surprising lifelike although some of them were huge! This bear statue was so big I’m pretty sure I could git inside of it’s head!

Our group checked out this bar in the area that is horror themed. Apparently, it used to be a haunted house attraction that was turned into a bar. Kinda creepy inside, but it was something that I would love to visit again as it gets closer to halloween.

I went by the house site again today and they’ve made some progress over the last time. They have essentially dug some deep holes for the tubing of the house. As I was taking pictures, I noticed that his colony of ants was highly disturbed. and they were just pouring in and out. It kinda reminded me of a disaster area! I stopped by the main office and got a plot diagram showing the dimensions of the back yard. Now I can start working on designing my landscape…any ideas? Below are the pics of the current house. The under construction house you see is going to be my neighbor. The dirt is my future site.

So, this morning was the run!  I woke up at 5am (not a good idea staying out late last night) and proceeded to the work site. I was surprised there were so many people there. The announcer said that they expected about 1000 people to be running. Everyone there was so friendly and family oriented. I had no idea this community even existed. Eventually, Joel and Karen showed up and the event began.

Of course, my shoe becomes untied within the first five seconds. I veer off the course to fix my flat and get back on the track. I stayed behind a few runners for most of the time and used them as a goal. To my surprise, I didn’t stop or walk for any of the time.  When I completed, I was drenched and exhausted, but very happy with myself. It felt good to set a goal and work towards it!

Such a good week!

Take Care,

Joe

Quest Update: Inspiration 2/10

I’m starting to find that inspiration comes from the past and reminds us of who we really are…

Today, my supervisor and I filmed and idea that I had when I first started working in Arizona. The idea was to make a “Choose Your Own Adventure” video that could be used in training new staff members. This idea isn’t new for me as I have always wanted to do this since my last degree program. However, this is the first time that I was able to make it a reality beyond a simple demo. Being able to be creative wasn’t what inspired me. It was what I was using….

It felt wonderful to be able to work with a camera again. In some ways, I think I get a bit sucked in when the camera is running. For a few moments, I can let people see what I see. If I find myself unable to use my words to express myself, I am able to find some comfort in being able to show them. With this camera in hand, I began to be inspired by looking back at my past projects. Even through late nights of editing video, I was always extremely happy to learn new ways of making things work with the camera. It was never a chore, it was a passion…
